Looks like it’s time to do one of these. I’ve actually never done one before, and it was interesting to do. Anyway, 2011 was a really great year for me in terms of my artwork. After a rough year of artwork in 2010 (personal work was so rare, as I devoted a lot of my time to a film I was working on that year), I finally just set myself free and decided to do whatever I feel like doing. And you know what? I really do owe a lot to just doing fun fan arts all the time. I saw Baysalt mention in her summary post that she managed to shake off that negative, guilty feeling that tends to come with drawing a lot of fan art. For the past few years, I’ve shied away from it, trying to focus myself on school assignments. But this year, I decided to just do both; fan art that’s fun, and school assignments (which are also pretty fun sometimes).
Some people have told me that fan art is a waste of talent, but I say fuck those people. We should be free to draw whatever we like, whenever we like, and in whatever style we like, and I’m glad that I broke free of that cage people were putting me in, you know? Nothing made me happier this year than drawing fan art for a 60s musical, or a kid’s show from the 90s, or drawing a princess as a prince and having people tell me that they were glad I did it, or how I brought back a piece of their childhood. That’s why I like doing what I do. Isn’t art supposed to be about making yourself and others happy? For me, it is.
Around August, I actually became happy with what I was doing after being stuck in a rut the first half of the year (I was only able to find one piece for a few of those months). I tried new styles and techniques. I studied the designs of other artists and was inspired. I tried to do a new piece as often as I could, whether it was fan art or otherwise, no matter how silly an idea it seemed to me. I started doing more finished pieces instead of just stopping at the sketch. And overall in 2011, I think I have improved, and hope to improve more.
Oh, one final thought. I also want to thank all of you for your support and viewership, because without it, I probably wouldn’t be as motivated as I am. So thanks for following and liking and reblogging, you’re all my heroes. <3
